Region: Rueda
SantYuste 2019
Grape: 100% Verdejo
Region: Rueda
Country: Spain
ABV: 13.5%
Tasting Notes: This is Esmerelda Garcia’s entry level wine but it is anything but entry level. It is vibrant with a beautiful texture; lime peel notes and heaps of mineral.
Notes on the Producer: Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, is in the region of Catilla y Leon. The region is famous for producing Verdejo and it where Esmerelda Garcia grew up. She returned in recent years to work her parents’ vineyards. Due to the climate, it is very dry and arid in the region, the vines have survived for 200 years - pre-dating Phylloxera! Esmerelda does not use chemicals or pesticides on her vines and ferments with native yeasts. She showcases the terroir of her different plots of vines in each of her cuvées; made different by the altitude and soils. The SantYuste is a direct press Verdejo from vineyards of sand, slate and clay which are at least 130 years old.
Rosé
Region: Silesia
Winnica Silesian Rosé 2019
Grapes: Rondo & Regenta
Region: Silesia
Country: Poland
ABV: 12%
Tasting Notes: A juicy, fruity rosé with heaps of summer red berries, citrus, grapefruit and a slightly creamy finish. This is a dry rosé but the mouth-feel and slightly lower acidity gives it the feeling of lots of sweet fruit.
Notes on the Producer: Winnica Silesian is a family run winery in Lower Silesia, Poland. They call themselves a boutique winery with only 11 hectares of vines. Many of their cuvées are inspired by the women in their family and the rosé is clearly the most important, Mama Violetta. The business is pushed forward by the daughters in the family; Marysia and Sonia who have experience in wine-making and marketing. Their wines are firm favourite at suppher events.
Red
Region: Gaillac
Vins et Volailles Me Libérez Pas Je M'en Charge 2020
Grapes: Prunelard, Braucol, Muscadelle, Mauzac
Region: Gaillac
Country: France
ABV: 13%
Tasting Notes: A collaboration between Fleur Godart and Jérôme Galaup. This is a blend of white and red grapes, in fact most of the grapes that Jérôme grows in Gaillac. The result is a velvety red with loads of juicy, ripe black cherry notes and brilliant freshness.
Notes on the Producer: Vins et Volailles are a brilliant gang of four women who own a wine business in Paris and after debates about feminism and natural wine, they decided to start making their own. They have a similar ethos to suppher, in that they want to bring women’s issues to the forefront whilst bringing people together and creating something special. Ah, we love them! Their wines are made using grapes from brilliant producers like, Athénaïs Beru and Jèrôme Galaup and their range is called, ‘Cuvèes Militantes’! This wine is a collaboration between, one of the crew, Fleur Godart and Jérôme Galaup who produces wines in Gaillac and the name is a play on a French Feminist book, “Ne nous libérez pas, on s’en charge” by B. Pavard, F. Rochefort and M. Zancari-Fournel. The other three members of Vins et Volailles are Louise Los, Marine Philomen Roux and Lisa Le Postec.
